The full kit contains very basic instructions, in a book written and illustrated by David and Brian, and called "It's not Tatting". In July 1994, The Lace Guild said " A patient beginner could probably get started without a teacher as the pamphlet is very user-friendly."
Hundreds of satisfied customers since then agree.
The kit has: a 45cm diameter vacuum formed polystyrene domed pillow, fitted with a blue draw-string cover and a matching square cover cloth; brass pins; a bran-filled pin cushion; a Pricker and pricking card; a divider pin and some berry pins; 12 pairs of Midland style bobbins; a selection of glass beads; spangling wire; and a ball of 50 or 60 Cordonnet cotton thread. (Students may obtain a pricking board, a fine crochet hook and all sorts of helpful tools later.) We also include a sleeve to keep your first bookmark clean.
We offer this complete course in the Art of the Shuttle. The tuition book has been written by Chia Chang “Europa” Dawson. She is a well known and respected teacher, including large numbers of merchant seamen and at least one policeman among her successful students! The book is published by Mainly Lace and called "Oh Yes, It is Tatting!"
A number of the illustrations have been specially prepared to enable you to work left handed if you find it more comfortable.
The kit comes complete with two shuttles, a size 0.75 Crochet Hook and 2 different coloured balls of No.20 Cordonnet thread, specially chosen to help the beginner to see the technique developing. You can buy further threads of your own choice as you begin to master the technique and learn how to read the patterns.
How about a change? - It's not Bobbin Lace!
We provide a basic instruction and pattern leaflet, some fabric to work on, blue film to protect the pattern, the needle and threads and of course some Tape Lace.
This kit contains an instruction pack which includes a few patterns, cotton net, thread, tambour hook and holder. You will need to supply a hands free embroidery frame to be able to work the lace.
It’s Not Tatting £5.00
A beginners guide to Bobbin Lace, for those who have no group or teacher nearby.
It describes all the tools and equipment you should start with, but only those you need. It is the outcome of David and Brian finding out for themselves what Pat and Barbara were up to. But as they were always somewhere else, they were never available to teach us. So we borrowed some of their books and had a go. We soon found they were written by experts who had forgotten more than we are ever likely to learn. Unfortunately they also forgot to explain the most basic things like: What is Spangling and how do you do it?
How do you wind thread onto a bobbin so that it does not keep coming undone? Why is a Half Stitch not half a Whole Stitch?
So we wrote down every thing we found out the hard way. We call it an idiots guide - written by idiots, rather than by experts. If we can do it, so can you. The book is also a very good Aide Memoir if you have been to a class but are not quite sure if you remembered it right. Or when you have got on a bit further and cannot remember how to start the next project. The title by the way, comes from our experiences at many Craft Fairs. There was always some self assured individual who would sweep her entourage straight past our stand, telling all and sundry that we were "just Tatting". We grew so good at spotting them that we would deliberately start our Sales Pitch by saying
"It’s not Tatting."
It’s Still Not Tatting £7.00
This follow up to David and Brian’s beginners book is in the same informal style combining step by step instructions in simple language, some working drawings and full colour illustrations. There are further techniques to learn, lots of handy tips Pat has picked up over many years of teaching all ages and abilities, information about materials you may need, and challenges to experiment with variations. “I am sure this would be a good buy for anyone trying to work alone.” – Lace Guild Book Review.
Yes It Is Tatting £5.50
We do know the difference, because David learned to Tat better than Pat. He learned from our second publication. Written by Chia Dawson, it is illustrated with ambidextrous drawings by Brian, so that you can use whichever leading hand you find more comfortable. The technique depends on turning the knot and knowing which side is up. Two shuttles and two different coloured threads can be a big help in the early stages, as many have reported back to us.
This book is very comprehensive, and will enable you to master the technique so that you can work from the growing selection of published pattern books.
Mainly Lace Bookmarks—Books 1 & 2 £12.50 each
These are books of 20 bookmark patterns with photocopies of the finished items. There are photographs on the front and back covers to show how some of the bookmarks look in colour.
The patterns are Book 1 - Torchon lace and graded from relatively easy to quite difficult.
Book 2 – A selection of bookmarks in various laces including Beds, Bucks and Milanese.
These are for the more experienced lace maker and some will give quite a challenge.
Fantasy Flowers £7.50
We are often asked "How long does it take to learn to make Lace?" For Pat the answer is more than twenty six years - so far! Of course there is always something new to discover, but at the same time, all Lace is made up of the same basic elements. Therefore as soon as you have mastered the basics in the beginners book you can make something much more eye-catching than yet another Bookmark! Pat and Brian prepared this book for inexperienced students to be able to show off after just a few weeks/months. And yet the few simple extra techniques you learn in this book will serve you well throughout your Lacemaking Career.
Though we have done many others since, we worked 8 different designs for the book. Detailed instructions are given for one form, and colour photographs of them all are provided. All the Patterns are included at two sizes, with explanations of the variations we made to produce all 8 flowers. We want you to make Fantasy Flowers in any size and colour, as wild and imaginative as you can think of. There is only one continuous piece of Lace to make and most people will be well on the way to finishing a whole Flower within a One Day Session. Get 6 or more friends together & we will come and do a Workshop.
